Six years ago today, I helped mobilize 10k Illinoisans to go to the Women’s March in Washington DC in protest of the inauguration.

When I was in high school, I had an abortion. Because I had access to safe medical care, I was able to make a choice about MY body and it changed my life.

On Jan 14 Uptown United, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce and the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum at the Broadway Armory to hear from all 10 candidates running for 48th ward alderperson.

The Manaa-Hoppenworth campaign is honored to announce that Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth has been endorsed by State Representative Theresa Mah for alderwoman of the 48th ward.

On Jan 7, the South-East Asia Center hosted a candidate forum at the Bezazian Library for all 10 candidates running to become the next alderperson of the 48th ward.

The forum was moderated by Peter Porr, founder and acting president of the South-East Asia Center.

The high cost of campaigning is a barrier for women, people of color, and anyone who cannot afford to buy their way into office. It's the reason Leni has fought for campaign finance reform for years. My platform is rooted in my fundamental values that health, housing, and safety are human rights. These values were foundational to my activism, continue to be foundational to my campaign, and will be foundational to my work as alderwoman.

After the 2016 election, I felt the deep concern that many of us did: I'm a woman. I'm a person of color. I'm queer. These are some of the many identities that we knew were in danger.

Rather than let that feeling overwhelm me, I got to work, organizing with my community.

Like many of us, my activism was activated after the 2016 election. In 2017, I co-founded Indivisible Illinois, a statewide group following the principles of the Indivisible guide to defend our democracy, and Indivisible IL9 – Andersonville-Edgewater right here in the 48th ward.
